Ingredients
- Dough: 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- Finishing: 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp water
- 1 tsp sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Make dough: Stir in flour, salt, and melted butter. Knead 5 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 30–45 minutes until doubled.
- Shape bowls: Punch down dough. Divide into 6 pieces. Roll each into a ball and place in a greased ramekin, muffin tin, or on a baking sheet.
- Second rise: Cover and let rise 15–20 minutes.
- Egg wash: Beat egg with 1 tbsp water. Brush over the tops of the dough.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake 18–22 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve: Slice open the top, hollow out the center (save for croutons!), and fill with hot soup.
Tip: For garlic flavor, brush baked bowls with melted garlic butter. You can also use this dough for breadsticks or pull-apart rolls!
