🍔 Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger
This **Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger** is a classic, juicy smash burger topped with a generous pile of caramelized onions — just like the ones served at roadside stands across Oklahoma! Simple, flavorful, and cooked on a griddle or skillet, it's a true American favorite.
Ingredients
- Burgers: 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter (for cooking)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Onions: 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp oil or butter (for frying onions)
- Optional: ketchup, mustard, pickles, cheese slices
Instructions
- Cook onions: In a skillet or griddle, melt butter or heat oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.
- Form patties: Divide ground beef into 4 loose balls — do not pre-form into patties.
- Smash & cook: Heat griddle or skillet over high heat. Place a beef ball on the hot surface, press down firmly with a spatula to flatten into a thin patty. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Cook 2–3 minutes until edges are browned and crispy. Flip and cook 1–2 minutes more (add cheese if using).
- Assemble: Spread buns with condiments if desired. Place burger on bottom bun, top generously with fried onions, and add toppings.
- Serve immediately! Best enjoyed hot and juicy.
Tip: For authentic flavor, use a flat-top griddle. You can also double the onion batch and store extras in the fridge for up to 5 days — perfect for quick meals!
